The history of fridge magnets

Believe it or not, the history of refrigerator magnets dates back to the early 20th century. The first fridge magnets were actually made of rubber and were used to hold small notes or reminders on the fridge door. However, it wasn't until the 1970s that the iconic souvenir fridge magnets we know and love today started to gain popularity. These magnets featured images of famous landmarks, cities, and even cartoon characters. People quickly fell in love with these little pieces of art and began collecting them as mementos of their travels or as a way to show off their interests and personality. I read somewhere that the fridge magnet market was over 1 billion in sales...WOW!

Why fridge magnets make great souvenirs

There's something special about bringing home a souvenir from your travels. It's a cool way to hold on to those precious memories and great way to share them with others. And what better way to do that than with a fridge magnet? Fridge magnets are not only affordable and easy to find, but they also capture the essence of a place in a small, colorful, and practical item. Every time you open your fridge door, new and old magnets instantly transport you back to that beautiful beach, charming city street, theme park, or breathtaking mountain range. Plus, they make great conversation starters when friends and family come over and see your collection displayed proudly on your fridge.

What Is More Iconic The Swiss Flag - Perfect As A Fridge Magnet

Swiss Inspired Magnets

When I designed the fridge magnets in our shop, I wanted them to exude Swiss charm. They were not inspired by magnets in the gift shop per se, but rather the unavoidable, iconic signs and symbols of everyday Switzerland. The Wanderweg signs, the canton wappens of Basel Stadt and Basel Landschaft, the Swiss Map and Swiss Love magnet. I also wanted to make them from wood so they would not be typical souvenirs.  It is also nice to be able to offer personalization, so when people see the directional sign, they want their favorite city included.

Fun and creative souvenir magnet ideas

While collecting magnets from different countries is undoubtedly exciting, there are plenty of other fun magnet ideas to explore. How about starting a collection of magnets featuring cool things to collect? From vintage cars to vinyl records, there's a magnet for every hobby and interest. Or maybe you're a fan of quirky and unusual magnets that defy convention. You can find magnets shaped like food items, musical instruments, or even miniature versions of famous works of art. And if you're feeling extra creative, you can even make your own custom magnets by printing out photos, artwork, or quotes and attaching them to a magnetic backing. The possibilities are endless, and the only limit is your imagination!
